In the new ranking of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Russia’s national team jumped from the 70th to the 49th place – up 21 positions. This is FIFA’s first ranking compiled after the World Cup held in Russia.

At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Russia’s national team showed its best World Cup result ever. At the group stage, Russian footballers hammered Saudi Arabia (5:0) and beat Egypt (3:1) securing their playoffs spot even though they lost to Uruguay (0:3). In the round of 16, Russia knocked out Spain in a penalty shootout (both regulation time and overtime ended in a 1:1 draw), and in quarterfinals, they lost to Croatia also in a penalty shootout (2:2 both in regulation time and in overtime).

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, in his turn, called the World Cup in Russia the best of all times. “This has been a great adventure for hundreds of thousands of people who came and enjoyed the welcoming and warm atmosphere. About four billion people watched the World Cup, many saw the beauty, cultural and historical richness of Russia. The world learned about it,” Mr Infantino said. “All those things together made the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ the best of all times.”
