SPIEF 2018 Results. The Event by the Numbers

The 22nd St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) was the largest in the history of the event. A record number of participants visited the forum with more than 17,000 representatives of the business and political community from 143 countries coming to take it in. Five hundred and ninety-three agreements were signed at SPIEF 2018, reaching a total of 2.625 trillion roubles.

The highlight of the Forum was a plenary session with President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of France Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, Vice President of the People’s Republic of China Wang Qishan, and Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde.

“What we need today is a full-scale trade peace rather than trade wars or even temporary trade armistices,” the Russian President emphasized in his speech at the Forum. “The theme of this year’s St. Petersburg forum is Building a Trust Economy. I am convinced that experience shows that the role of trust as a development factor will grow.”

The Forum was attended by the following heads of state and leadership of international organizations: President of the Central African Republic Faustin-Archange Touadéra, President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon, President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov, UN Development Programme Administrator Achim Steiner, Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Rashid Alimov, and Secretary General of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Michael Christides.


Proxy Centre participated in several aspects of the Forum’s preparation:


Proxy Centre was in charge of the official SPIEF cars used to transport event speakers and participants.

The official car of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is Mercedes-Benz. Four hundred luxury, executive, and business class cars were provided for participants: 150 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, 100 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, 100 Mercedes-Benz V-Class, and 50 Mercedes-Benz Sprinters.

Proxy Centre specialists saw to the timely selection of qualified drivers conforming with the strict requirements of Russia’s largest economic forum, overseeing preparatory work on the cars in anticipation of the Forum and monitoring the technical condition of cars during the event. Proxy Centre employees managed the distribution of cars among participants, and also monitored compliance with driver scheduling.


SPIEF 2018 had a record number of participants; the Forum was visited by three thousand people more than in 2017. Proxy Centre employees participated in the preparation of accreditation points and access control points to the main Forum site for Forum participants and technical personnel. During the Forum, the company’s specialists managed the accreditation points assigned to them.

To ensure the work of the accreditation points, Proxy Centre provided sublimation printers for printing badges from its own equipment stock, which has proved to be successful at major international events.

Congress Management

Meetings were held simultaneously in 22 conference rooms and the Congress Hall, the largest room on site, capable of accommodating 3,700 people at one time. Proxy Centre specialists managed the conference rooms and Congress Hall. Thirty-one administrators and 99 volunteer assistants were involved in the work, coordinating contracting companies and Forum technical personnel, providing reports on room occupancy, managing the performance of congress equipment and the availability of panel spots and simultaneous interpretation booths, and ensuring that guests were seated correctly.

SPIEF 2018 by the numbers:

  • More than 150 business events took place as part of the main programme of the Forum.
    In addition to thematic sections and roundtables, part of the SPIEF 2018 programme involved a meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club, bilateral business dialogues between leaders (Russia–France, Russia–Japan), a meeting of the Business Twenty (B20) Regional Consultation Forum, whose participants discussed recommendations for the leaders of the B20 leading up to the Buenos Aires summit on 30 November – 1 December 2018.
  • Over 20% of world GDP – the total amount of capital managed by 40 international investors that participated in SPIEF 2018.
  • Seventy-four TV channels broadcast the SPIEF 2018 plenary session.
    More than 1,000 moderators and speakers participated in SPIEF 2018 discussions.
    More than three thousand flights came through Pulkovo Airport during the Forum.
  • Over 550 participants joined the US delegation, which was the largest foreign delegation at the Forum.
  • Seventy-five regional heads of the Russian Federation participated in the Forum.
    SPIEF 2018 was visited by more than 200 executives from major foreign companies and 700 executives from Russian companies.
  • Four thousand eighty-one media representatives registered for the Forum. This is more than one thousand journalists more than in 2017.
  • Over 60 cultural events took place at SPIEF 2018, including: a gala concert at Mikhailovsky Theatre in support of the fight against cancer, a charity evening with the participation of pianist Mira Yevtich and the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under the direction of maestro Valery Gergiev in the Fabergé Museum, and a gala concert in the Presidential Library. The city’s leading theatres hosted repertoire performances along with musical events specially timed to coincide with SPIEF 2018. The Mariinsky Theatre hosted premieres from Forum guest countries France and Japan, as well as Italy.
  • One hundred and four companies became partners of SPIEF 2018. General partners of the Forum include VTB Bank, Gazprom, Rosneft, Sberbank of Russia, Tinkoff Bank, Rostec State Corporation, Russian Export Center, and DOM.RF Russia Housing and Urban Development Corporation.

Major Agreements:

  • up to 400 billion roubles – a trilateral agreement between Rosneft, Vnesheconombank, and VEB-Leasing for strategic cooperation in financing projects and providing leasing services
  • up to 278 billion roubles – an agreement of intent between the Eurasian Development Bank and the Interregional Company Belkomur for a syndicated loan for the Belkomur Railway Project
  • USD 2.1 billion – Rosneft long-term contracts with 12 Mongolian import companies to supply gasoline and diesel fuel
  • USD 1.5 billion – an agreement between the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the Japanese Marubeni Corporation, the Baltic Gas Chemical Company, and Invasta Capital for the construction of a natural gas to methanol processing plant in the city of Ust-Luga, Leningrad Region. The plant’s capacity is to equal 1.7 million tonnes of methanol per year.
